Money

What you may be worried about -

  • The person who’s abusing you may have insisted that you don’t go out to work, or that he controls all the money you earn if you do. You may be worried that you (and your children) won’t have enough money to live on if you leave, or that you will be responsible for him not having enough.
  • You may think that your only option is to leave your family home, and ‘start out again’ somewhere else, which may include having to buy new furniture, toys, etc. You may worry that you’ll have to pay large bills for legal advice if you want to divorce, or claim half of the house and its contents, or to represent your children.
  • It may be that you are only able to live in the UK because you are married to your abuser and that if you leave him you won’t have any money and won’t be able to claim any benefits.

“I would not have known about a lot of financial help if BSWA hadn’t pointed me in the right direction. They are fantastic.”

“Unfortunately, because of the law I was not entitled to benefits, but [my support worker] helped me to register with Jobcentre where I will keep on looking for a job.”

How can BSWA help me?
You can call the Helpline on 0800 0732 606 Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 5.00pm to talk about how abuse is affecting you and your children, and to find out more about what we can offer.
